FAQs
How does dyno tuning work?
Your engine depends on fuel, air, and spark to run. When those ingredients enter the combustion chamber in the right combination, you’re in business. The fuel ignites, the pistons turn the crankshaft, the wheels turn, and off you go.
When the air-fuel ratio (AFR) is off, you’re in for a bumpy ride. Too much fuel, and you’re running rich. Not enough fuel, and you’re running lean, which creates heat. Run lean too long, and not only will the ride be rough, you’ll start melting critical parts like your pistons, spark plugs, and cylinder heads.
In modern bikes, AFR is controlled by the electronic control unit (ECU), a tiny computer that tells the engine how to operate. (In older bikes, that’s the carburetor’s job.)
A dynamometer is a tool for evaluating your engine’s performance and then adjusting the ECU programming or the carburetor to make it better. We essentially strap your motorcycle onto a treadmill and connect it to a set of computers, then measure a baseline map of your engine’s torque and horsepower all the way from 0 to 100% throttle at 10% intervals. Then, we go back and troubleshoot the problem spots on your map to make sure your AFR holds steady no matter how much you’re twisting the throttle.
When we’re done, your bike will run more smoothly and efficiently, and it will sustain less wear and tear over time. Best of all, it’ll be easier to do what you bought it for in the first place: go fast!
Why do I need dyno tuning?
Whether you’ve modified your bike or just got it fresh from the factory, custom tuning on a dynamometer can significantly improve the performance of your engine.
Anytime you modify or upgrade your bike, you’re changing how your engine breathes—how fuel and air flow into the engine. Dyno tuning helps make sure that your engine adjusts to those changes so they don’t interfere with your riding experience.
But even when you haven’t touched a thing, your motorcycle still may not perform as well as it could because modern manufacturing standards prioritize emissions control over power and performance. Almost all bikes are programmed to run lean. Dyno tuning lets you run your engine the way you want to instead of the way Uncle Sam says you should.
Can’t I just tune my motorcycle myself?
We always advocate for riders to get to know their bikes and take ownership of keeping them in the best possible condition. There are several commercially available products you can use to create your own maps while you drive in the real world, then make adjustments in the ECU. However, like any tool, self mappers have their limitations. Our dyno simulates real riding conditions by adding loads to your motorcycle using an eddy brake, and it gives you a more comprehensive and precise picture of your engine than you would get on your own. Putting resources toward a real custom tune allows you to make the most of the investment you’ve made in your motorcycle.
What does Tuff Dollar tune?
We specialize in Harley-Davidson V-Twins. If you’re interested in tuning a different make or model, contact us.
What products does Tuff Dollar use?
We tune on a SuperFlow dynamometer using DynaJet PowerVision, Dynojet Power Commander, ThunderMax and Daytona Twin Tec products.
What should I do to get ready for a tune?
Make sure your motorcycle is in good condition with a full tank of gas. It’s especially important for your tires to be aired up and in solid shape, because they’ll be doing a lot of work on the dyno.
Is it really a custom tune?
Absolutely. Some shops just apply a canned map based on your make and model and tweak it from there, or they only tune at full throttle. We start from scratch and cover your entire map.
How long does the process take?
The length of the tuning process depends on several factors, but generally speaking, it will take 4-8 hours. We aren't out to make a quick dollar-- we want to get your bike running properly, no matter how long it takes. So if you're bringing in your motorcycle for a full tune, plan to leave it with us for the day.
Can I watch you tune my bike?
Sure. You’re welcome to watch us work.
How much does a tuning cost?
Since the time it takes to tune varies, the price does, too. The best way to get an estimate is to contact us and tell us about your bike so we can give you a quote.
Will dyno tuning void my warranty?
We use top-of-the-line equipment, work exclusively with properly licensed software, and handle every bike in our shop with respect and care. Our services should not void your factory warranty. However, it is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the terms of your warranty before you book a dyno tune.
If I already have a tuning license, will you charge me for a new one?
We may be able to use the license you already have, depending on what it is. Contact us to find out if yours is compatible.
Can I get adjustments later without paying for an entire retuning?
You can bring your motorcycle in for adjustments. You’ll still pay for time on the dyno, but the time required will be shorter than for a full tune.
